Marianne and Anita

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the sixties. As a child I remember one of the first tapes that I loved listening to was Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. I don't know who actually owned the tape, I presume it was my parents, but I remember sitting in my bedroom singing along to "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds". I also remember my sister, loving the Beach Boys. That's my memory, the Beatles and I and Debbie and the Beach Boys.

I recently, began looking through some old pictures that I had cut out from magazines and books over the years and I found myself drawn to the pictures of some of the most prominent women of the sixties and seventies. Even the looks of Kate Moss that I loved, were ones where it seemed she too was influenced by these unique women.

In the world of rock n' roll, like many, I particularly love the look of Marianne Faithfull and Anita Pallenberg. The girlfriends of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, the clothes that these women wore were simply out of this world. Their whole aura and energy is so exciting and incredible to look back on and it's not because they were the girlfriends of two of the worlds biggest rock stars. In fact, I would imagine they were in the Stones world because of who they intrinsically were. To me, they just ooze excitement, danger and a ferocious speed of life.

My interest in Marianne and Anita then motivated me to look further into their history, other than what was apparent in photographs.

Obviously, I already knew that Marianne was a musician, but I wasn't familiar with any of her music. Now, I'm still by no means an expert, but I discovered that some of her music is really beautiful. Her first ever song "As Tears go By" was written by Mick and Keith. Her voice which is often the subject of much controversy and derision, was very clear and beautifully deep. Albeit, it was before drugs played their part in creating the raspy voice that Marianne is known for and loved for (by many) today. I highly recommend looking into her work, because there is something about her that makes her continuously relevant. Difficult to pinpoint, it's her music, her look, her incredible life story, her everything.

Anita too, was a very important figure in the sixties and seventies. She was with Keith Richards for over ten years and is known to have been so important to the Stones, she has been referred to as the fifth Stone. She is also an actress, appearing in numerous films including Barbarella and Performance with Jagger.

I'm not really going anywhere with this, only to highlight how stunning and interesting these women were. Their clothes were so fantastic that I can't even begin to describe them, only to note how prevalent their style continues to be to this day.
